Avelient Partner Profile: Christian Giannelli Photography
Avelient maintains successful partnerships with some of the most creative and innovative businesses in web design, development, content, and marketing. One of our most impressive partnerships is with Christian Giannelli Photograhy.
Jeff Logan and Christian have worked side-by-side on several eye-catching websites, making use of Christian’s artistic photography style and uncanny ability to capture memorable images. Lets us introduce Christian to you with an interview we conducted earlier this year.
How long have you been in business?
I’ve been primarily photographing inns and bed & breakfasts for four years.
What is your specialty?
As an inn photographer, one has to do many things well—from food photography, to exteriors and gardens, to interiors. Each of these photography subsets require different lighting, composition and styling techniques. With that being said, I really enjoy interior photography because it requires a lot of problem solving. Composition and lighting conditions change from one space to another, and I enjoy figuring out how I am going to best photographically represent the space.
What is your dream photo shoot?
I love interior photography for all its complexities, so the ideal shoot would really test my abilities and push my skills to the limit. I also love to travel—the further afield, the better. I would have to say that the dream job for me would be photographing a historically and culturally significant building renowned for its beauty and artistry, like Versailles or the Sistine Chapel. In this dream, I would also have several assistants to travel with and carry around all of the lighting equipment!
Do you have a favorite photo?
Picking a favorite photo is a difficult thing for me because I am very critical of my own work. Sometimes you like a photo because it was hard to light, maybe it was a tricky shot to get, or you could have even had a great time on the shoot so you always remember it fondly. I am proud of this particular photo because I think it provides a lot of narrative for a little amount of space—when it comes to inn photography, I generally love capturing vignettes like this one.
Can you tell us about your background?
Following two years of extensive training at photography school, I spent three years assisting two mentors within two very different genres of photography. I learned a great deal about composition, lighting and business principles by regularly assisting a NYC lifestyle photographer in the fast-paced world of lifestyle magazine photography. I had the great fortune to work on the sets (both studio-based and on-site) for world-renowned print media companies such as This Old House, Country Living, Food & Wine, Family Circle, Brides, and Glamour. Additionally, under the tutelage of a Philadelphia-based architectural photographer, I was introduced to new and exciting lighting and composition techniques on a grand scale. I’d like to think that both influences—the warmth and personality of lifestyle photography, and the clean, bold lines of architectural photography—are evident in my own work.
